The Elusive Upload Progress Indicator in Python Notebook: A Tale of Discovery

Updated: Jul 10, 2023

How I Finally Found the Progress Indicator That Was Right in Front of Me

TLDR: If you're struggling to find the upload progress indicator in Python Notebook, it's not just you. 👀 This blog post will show you were you can find it. 🔎

As a regular user of Python Notebook, I often find myself uploading files to work with in my notebooks. Some small, some large.

Today, I found myself uploading a 2GB custom stable diffusion model into my notebook, waiting for for it to upload, and I realized that I had no idea how much progress had been made.

I knew there had to be an upload progress indicator somewhere, but for the life of me, I couldn't find it. I began my search by scouring the interface, clicking on every tab and button I could find, hoping to stumble upon the elusive progress indicator.

When that didn't work, I turned to Google, typing in various queries like "Python Notebook upload progress indicator" and "where is the upload progress bar in Python Notebook." Despite my best efforts, I couldn't find a clear answer.

Feeling a bit defeated, I returned to my notebook and continued to wait for the file to upload. And that's when I saw it—right there at the bottom of the screen.

The upload progress indicator had been in front of me the entire time. It was a simple horizontal bar that filled up as the upload progressed, along with an indicator showing how much of the file had been uploaded.

In hindsight, it seems so obvious, but at the time, it was anything but. I realized that others might be facing the same issue, so I decided to share this quick blog post to help fellow Python Notebook users find the upload progress indicator more easily.

It's right at the bottom of the screen, just above the status bar. Filed under #facepalm 🤦‍♂️
